Step into the world of Nagoya’s traditional craftsmanship with a hands-on introduction to Kuro Montsuki dyeing, a technique refined over 400 years. Originally used to create the most formal black kimono, this method achieves a deep, lustrous black through repeated layers of dyeing. Artisans then apply advanced resist techniques to add the white family crest — a symbol of heritage and identity in Japan.
Guided by a master craftsman, you will first learn about the history and process of Kuro Montsuki dyeing and its role in Japanese culture. You’ll then move on to the workshop, where you will imprint your chosen kamon (family crest) onto a jet-black tenugui scarf, selecting from several crest designs and colors.
