Located in Nagoya’s historic Arimatsu district, this immersive program offers a rare opportunity to discover the art of Shibori tie-dyeing in its cultural birthplace. Arimatsu has been the heart of Japan’s Shibori production for over 400 years, with beautifully preserved streets that trace back to the Edo period. Its beautifully preserved streets and merchant houses still retain the charm of a bygone era and have been recognized as a Located in Nagoya’s historic Arimatsu district, this half-day program offers a rare opportunity to discover the art of Shibori tie-dyeing in its cultural birthplace. Arimatsu has been the heart of Japan’s Shibori production for over 400 years, with beautifully preserved streets that trace back to the Edo period.

Designed for groups—whether for education, incentive, or cultural enrichment—this experience immerses participants in the story and spirit of Arimatsu Shibori. Begin with a guided orientation and meet the artisans dedicated to preserving this iconic Japanese textile tradition. Then, divide into teams to create original Shibori designs and compete for the best creation.

The program includes time to explore Arimatsu’s charming streets, browse artisan shops, and experience modern interpretations of this centuries-old craft. It’s a perfect way to engage your group in a fun, collaborative, and culturally meaningful setting.

Itinerary

1:30 PM – Arrive at Arimatsu-Narumi Tie-Dyeing Museum

Begin with a guided introduction to the history and cultural importance of Arimatsu Shibori, including a conversation with local artisans.

2:30 PM – Shibori Team-Building Activity

Split into teams and participate in a friendly Shibori design competition. Create your own hand-dyed piece using centuries-old methods. (Location: Museum or Moss Arimatsu)

4:00 PM – Explore the Historic Streets of Arimatsu

With a custom walking map in hand, visit notable locations such as Hayatsune Dyeing and SUZUSAN. Enjoy time for artisan shopping or a café break.

5:00 PM – Artisan Evaluation & Results Announcement

Return for final feedback from Arimatsu artisans and find out which team’s design stood out.

5:30 PM – Program Ends
