  • Watch Japan’s imperial cormorant fishermen practice a 1,300-year-old fishing tradition
  • Visit a historic cormorant fisherman’s home and learn about their unique daily life
  • Savor freshly grilled ayu fish in an atmospheric riverside setting
  • Cruise the Nagara River by private boat as night falls over the water
  • Experience the harmony between nature and culture in one of Japan’s most scenic rivers

Step into a world where ancient tradition and nature still thrive together. This evening tour takes you to Seki City in Gifu Prefecture, home to one of Japan’s last remaining imperial cormorant fishing families. Designated by the Imperial Household Agency, these fishermen—known as usho—have preserved this remarkable tradition for over 1,300 years.

Begin your journey at the historic Ukai Fisherman’s House, a 300-year-old riverside residence. Here, you’ll be welcomed by one of the usho, who will share insights into the daily life of a cormorant fisherman. Enjoy a traditional ayu (sweetfish) meal, known for its delicate flavor and firm texture, caught using the very techniques you’ll soon observe.

As the sun sets, board a private boat to witness ukai, the mesmerizing method where trained cormorants dive gracefully to catch fish beneath lantern-lit waters. This rare and deeply cultural experience is enhanced by the backdrop of the clear, rushing waters of the Nagara River—one of Japan’s three major fast-flowing rivers.

A perfect blend of storytelling, nature, and culinary delight, this immersive evening is a journey into the soul of Japan’s living heritage.
