OUTLINE

Sakushima is the largest manned island in Mikawa Bay, Sakushima prospered in the olden days of sail boats, during the Edo period, when merchant ships named Sengokubune traveling along the Mikawa Bay would dock at its port while waiting for a favorable wind. The town center flourished with the bustling sea activity including fishing. But in recent years the population has declined and only 250 people live here.

Sakushima started the island revitalization project in 1995. They made use of rich nature of the island for the art installations Today, Sakushima has become a popular destination where approximately 100,000 tourists can come to seek out the nature, art and gourmet food of the island.

At the beach-side Nekko Juku,(root school) surrounded by nature, you can play all day while experiencing a traditional rustic lifestyle. The director Mr. Tani opened a school for developing character and personal progression in 2012. He handles the planning and operation of nature experience courses for children. Currently, Nekko Juku‘s activities center around providing a place to have experiences, while teaching the positive aspects of sustainable living and knowledge of how to use natural resources.
