Discover the powerful sound and remarkable craftsmanship behind Japan’s traditional taiko drums in Hamamatsu.

Visit Ando Taiko, a family-run workshop founded in 1894 that has preserved its handcrafted techniques for more than 130 years. Every taiko produced here is still made entirely by hand using methods passed down through four generations.

Begin with a guided tour of the workshop. Watch skilled artisans at work and learn about the different materials used in taiko making, including sen wood (Japanese kalopanax) used in today’s workshop and premium Japanese zelkova (keyaki) prized for the finest drums.

Then step into the role of an artisan yourself. Under the guidance of the fourth-generation master craftsman, you’ll stretch the drumhead using traditional wooden mallets and discover how every strike affects the drum’s tone and resonance.

After the master carefully inspects your work, you’ll complete your taiko by hammering in the decorative tacks that secure the drumhead.

More than simply making a souvenir, you’ll experience a craft deeply connected to Japan’s centuries-old festival culture. Take home a handcrafted taiko that reflects both your own unique sound and the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship.

This experience is available with two departure times. Please select your preferred start time when booking.

10:00 AM / 2:00 PM – Meet Your Guide at Ando Taiko

Meet your professional English-speaking guide at Ando Taiko, a family-run workshop founded in 1894, located about 7 minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot from JR Hamamatsu Station. After a brief introduction, begin exploring the world of traditional Japanese taiko making.

10:15 AM / 2:15 PM – Workshop Tour

Step inside the working workshop and observe every stage of taiko production.

Learn how different woods—including sen wood (Japanese kalopanax) used in today’s workshop and premium Japanese zelkova (keyaki) used for the finest drums—along with natural leather and traditional techniques create each instrument’s distinctive sound.

10:45 AM / 2:45 PM – Hands-on Taiko Making Experience

Under the guidance of the fourth-generation master craftsman, build your own authentic taiko using traditional tools.

Stretch the drumhead with a wooden mallet, learning how each adjustment influences the drum’s tone and resonance. Once the master has inspected your work, complete your taiko by hammering in the decorative tacks. Your finished taiko includes a 15 cm drum, drumsticks, and a decorative cord.
