Highlights
  • Experience Hamamatsu's 100-year-old nighttime fishing tradition on the waters of Lake Hamana.
  • Depart directly from your lakeside ryokan aboard a traditional fishing boat at sunset.
  • Catch crabs and fish by spear and net beneath the glow of a single lantern.
  • Enjoy your freshly caught dinner, prepared by local fishermen on a floating raft.
  • Wake up beside Lake Hamana and explore the area by bicycle or on foot.

Escape the city and discover one of Hamamatsu’s most remarkable local traditions with an overnight stay on the shores of Lake Hamana. This immersive experience centers around Takiya Fishing, a nighttime fishing method that has been practiced here for more than a century.

As the sun sets, board a small traditional boat directly from your ryokan’s private dock and head out onto the quiet waters of Lake Hamana. Guided only by the glow of a lantern, you’ll search for crabs and fish hiding beneath the surface before catching them with traditional spears and nets alongside experienced local fishermen.

After the fishing experience, continue to TAKIYA BASE, a floating dining raft anchored on the lake. Here, your catch is transformed into an unforgettable dinner prepared by the fishermen themselves while you relax under a sky full of stars. Sharing freshly cooked seafood in the middle of the lake is an experience found nowhere else in Japan.

When dinner is over, simply board your boat again and cruise back across the peaceful lake to your accommodation—an unforgettable ending to the evening.

Spend the night at Ryokan Inoue, a small family-run inn where life on Lake Hamana still feels authentic and unhurried. After enjoying a traditional Japanese breakfast the following morning, continue exploring the area at your own pace. Lake Hamana is an excellent destination for cycling, lakeside walks, and discovering charming fishing villages long after your fishing adventure has ended.
