Highlights
  • Explore a working dye factory preserving Hamamatsu's nearly century-old Chusen dyeing tradition.
  • Watch skilled artisans transform plain fabric into vibrant patterns using traditional techniques.
  • Create your own hand-dyed tenugui, a traditional Japanese cotton hand towel, under the guidance of experienced local craftsmen.
  • Discover the beautiful color gradients and soft blending unique to authentic Chusen dyeing.
  • Take home your original hand-dyed tenugui as a memorable Japanese souvenir.

Step inside a traditional dye workshop and discover the artistry behind Hamamatsu Chusen, a centuries-old dyeing technique originally developed for creating beautiful summer yukata fabrics.

Your experience begins with an exclusive tour of Futahashi Dye Factory, a family-run workshop founded in 1927 that continues to preserve one of Hamamatsu’s most treasured crafts. Watch skilled artisans at work as they apply resist paste with handcrafted stencils, carefully pour dye by hand, and complete the washing and drying processes that give Chusen its distinctive beauty.

After learning the techniques behind this remarkable craft, you’ll become an artisan yourself. Under the guidance of professional craftsmen, choose your favorite colors and dye your own original tenugui hand towel using authentic Chusen methods. One of the most captivating features of Chusen is its naturally soft color blending and delicate gradients—effects that cannot be replicated by modern printing.

Your finished tenugui is yours to take home immediately, making it a meaningful souvenir of your time in Japan. This hands-on experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with Japan’s living craftsmanship while discovering the enduring tradition of Hamamatsu’s yukata dyeing culture.
